Blenders 101 - Read This Before Buying

Blenders have come a long way in the past few years. More modern units follow a trend of increased power to crush ice and contemporary styling with touchpad button and stainless steel or chrome finishes.

There are now standard countertop units that come with both narrow and wide carafes that act as hybrid blending and food processor systems as well as handheld units or immersion hand sticks which can be used for making smoothies in seconds or sauces in right the pot without having to change vessels. • Carafes are typically either glass or plastic. Plastic has the tendency to scratch or absorb odors. Some models have jars that are available in stainless steel, but this can make measurement difficult and transfer temperature quickly compared to glass which is much more insulating. The capacity of the carafe is another consideration. Often measured in cups or fluid ounces, sizes can range from small 2 cup single-serving carafes to large 8 cup (half gallon) sizes.
• A Vented Lid is helpful to pour or add extra ingredients and release steam pressure produced by hot items. We recommend darker colors, as white and cream colored lids have the tendency to stain from processing berries or tomatoes.
• A Removable Blade assembly is much easier to clean compared to permanently fixed counterparts, especially when you can just throw it in the dishwasher. Look for assemblies that will resist rusting.
• Controls are mostly personal preference although touch panels are much easier to clean as there’s no crevices for spills to seem into. Some units, like the Hamilton Beach Wave Station, will also often include preprogrammed settings depending on what you are making. This is a bit of a gimmick, but helpful if you can’t monitor what you’re blending. • Speeds range from simple 2 speed units to as many as 16. Do not expect a big difference in functionality between a 12 speed blender and 14 speed. Often a simple 3 speed high, medium and low is sufficient for almost any application.
• Power is measured in wattage, which can range from 200 watts on an lower powered immersion unit to well over 1500 watts on the high end. Generally speaking, the more watts, the louder and more expensive the unit.
